Emily's Story
In the spring semester of 2009, I signed up for Meteorology for the general physical science requirement I needed to graduate. I attended the first class, but immediately felt as if the professor were speaking a different language. Instead of risking a B in a general ed course, I signed up for Physical Science, and walked in the second week of lab. I sat at a different table the first week, but someone took my spot the next week, so I wandered to Gene's lab group. I noticed that he kept smiling at me, and he had kind eyes and a sweet smile. I looked forward to each Physical Science lab class on Thursdays! Eventually, he caught up with me after class one day and asked me out. I knew he was the one for me because on our first date, he played "59th Street Bridge Song" (aka Feelin' Groovy) by Simon and Garfunkel for me on the guitar. If anyone doesn't already know, that is MY song; it has been since I was in junior high. You can't just ignore a sign like that.
Gene's Story
I had been having a rocky time with the chick I was into at the time. The first day of Physical Science class, when Emily came in she sat at the table across from me, and I stared at her the whole class period. All the next week, since class only met once a week, I thought of her, so much so that I told my mom about a girl in my class that was really pretty and had a nice smile. Luckily, she sat at my table the next week, and we had eyes for each other. The next couple class periods were occupied with flirting, and eventually I asked her out. The rest is history.
We planned a trip to Nicaragua over Christmas break 2011 to visit Gene's Mom's side of the family. I asked Roylan, Gene's brother, if he would take pictures of us on the beach because we don't really have that many pictures of us throughout our relationship. The day we went to the beach at Jiquilillo in the northern part of Nicaragua, it was beautiful and clear outside. We ate fresh fish from the ocean that his family prepared for us, and spent some time playing on the beach and lying around in hammocks. Around the time the sun was setting, we decided to go take our pictures. I didn't know anything was going on until we were standing on the sand, facing each other and the tide came in over our feet. Gene asked me if we could move over a few feet to the dry area of the sand. That was when I suspected he was going to go down on one knee, and he did! He pulled out a beautiful ring and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Of course, I said yes! After a few minutes sitting on the beach and watching the sun set, we went back up to the beach house and his family had brought champagne to toast with us. The rest of the trip was so surreal and perfect! When we got back to Pittsburg, it was New Year's Eve. We went to my parents' house for the annual New Year's Eve party and surprised my family with our pictures and story. Hannah and Mama made delicious sugar cookies for us, and we had a great time. Needless to say, it was the best Christmas break ever.
